"UK: "We need to produce more"

At the Sainbury's farming conference Judith Batchelar, Sainsbury’s brand director stated "We need to produce more." This is in relation to studies showing that in 2013 the UK was only 55% self-sufficient in vegetable production and barely 10% in the production of fruit.

Since 2000 the UK's self-sufficiency has dropped by 12% in total, as of 2013. Back in 1991 the percentage was even higher at 75%. The latest statistics reveal the UK is around 60 per cent self-sufficient in food, it generates enough food to last only 219 days. In 1991 self-sufficiency was 75 per cent.

"We need to build a much more resilient food system..." she said, hoping the UK could become more self-sufficient in the future.
