Erik Kieftenburg, Fruit Noordholland:

“Shortage of good Elstar from first harvest”

Currently, the sales of top fruit are quite steady. “The ‘barn fruit’ has been sold by now, allowing for a more streamlined supply,” says Erik Kieftenburg from Fruit Noordholland. “We have a slight shortage of good Elstar from the first harvest. Those apples are being sold at good prices from 65-75 cents for the 75/80 sorting to 55-60 cents for the 70/75 sorting. But we have enough supply from the second harvest, and we also have plenty of product from that harvest that is not quite perfect, which is why those prices are much lower, depending on colour and hardness. Moreover, prices for Jonagold are even lower than those of Elstar.”

“We cannot complain about the sales of Conference pears. Much is exported, to countries including Germany and the UK, but the domestic market is also doing quite well. I expect sales will remain good in the coming weeks. The 55ers have good prices comparatively, and 75ers are not readily available. The pears are much finer than last year, but prices are a bit higher. Comice pears also have fairly good prices,” Kieftenburg concludes.
