"Peru: "Our strategy is to delay production - there is a big supply of grapes"

Depending on the region, the harvest of grapes in Peru began a couple of months ago. So far, climate change has not had a negative impact on this production and, since Peruvians have access to almost all markets, Peruvian producers expect to have a good campaign.

Last year Peru exported more than 37 million boxes of grapes and producers still don't known if they will surpass that volume this year. "The Red Globe grapes market is saturated, we need to work with new seedless varieties. Many producers are changing their Red Globe grapes for new varieties and others are incorporating them into new hectares of farmland. They won't have results overnight, but they'll have them in some years. However, it's possible that these two situations will create a balance in the market," said Eduardo Talavera, of Sang Barrent's Company (SBC).

Peru has vineyards throughout the country but, due to the different weather conditions and geographic location of the crops, not all producers can have access to the market at the best selling time. "Since our crops are located in the valley of Nepeña, south of Chimbote, we have the possibility to program our harvest as needed. The relative humidity in this area is similar to that in Piura and our health programs are stringent, at the same time the area's climatic conditions and the permanent supply of water, thanks to the irrigation of the CHINECAS project, allow our fruits to have a good completion and a full color," the representative stated.

"This year we have delayed our production to achieve better market conditions, so we plan the beginning of our seedless white grape harvest for the middle of December and the Red Globe variety for the second week of January. We hope to enter the markets when the supply of white seedless grapes in the United States is low and when the supplies of Red Globe in the Asian and European markets are low. We might find that the US market is also attractive for the red seedless grapes, but that depends on the volume of seedless red grapes that we have stored," concluded Talavera.
