Consumers welcome price drop as Turkish bananas hit local markets

In local markets, the banana price falls to 4 Turkish Lira/kg as the Turkish Anamur banana replaces its imported counterpart.

“This season, there is an abundance of fruit in general, especially of bananas, apples and mandarins. This, in itself, reduces retail prices in markets but as the Anamur banana reaches market stalls this month, prices fell even further. It sells for 4 Lira/kg when the imported ones sold for 6-7 Lira. At these prices, the banana is no longer a luxury item for consumers,” say local producers.

Mersin, southern Turkey, produces 70% of Turkey’s bananas in its Anamur and Bozyazı districts.
