Consumption data in the EU

65.1% of Romanians don’t eat fruit and veg daily

More than two thirds of Romanians aged 15 and older (65.1%) do not eat fruits and vegetables daily, putting the country last in the EU ranking in this respect, according to a study released Friday by the European Statistical Office (Eurostat) which is based on data from 2014.

Not far behind Romanians are Bulgarians, with more than half of the population (58.6%) saying they do not eat fruits and vegetables daily. In contrast, the EU champions in terms of daily consumption of fruits and vegetables are Greeks (30.1% of the population), followed by Croatia (27.5%) and Slovenia (27%).

In the European Union, more than a third of the population (34.4%) does not eat fruits and vegetables daily, while less than 15% (14.1%) consume at least five portions every day. Among the Member States, the share of those who consume at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day is highest in the UK (33.1%) and the lowest in Romania (3.5%) and Bulgaria (4.4%).

Regular consumption of fruits and vegetables is considered an important component of a healthy and balanced diet. Fruit and vegetable consumption is shaped by both gender and education level, with those eating at least five servings of fruits and vegetables every day usually having higher education. For example, in Romania, only 2.7% of those with low levels of education consume at least five servings of vegetables and fruit each day, compared to 5.5% for those with a higher level of education.
