Interest in lemon production in Adana, south-central Anatolia, is growing fast but production is falling behind. The land dedicated to the citrus fruit increased by 700 ha between 2011 and 2015, whilst the yield reduced by 13,000 tons.
According to Süleyman Girmen, chair of the Chamber of Agriculture, in recent years, the Cukurova Region (which includes Adana) has attracted the attention of growers and investors as a perfect place for citrus fruit production. Some, he says, turn to the citrus sector, as they believe that it yields high revenues for reasonably small effort.
“New growers fail to conduct any market research and they lack the necessary knowledge. Increasing production in such an unplanned manner can be both damaging to the economy and upsetting for the growers whose expectations won’t be met” warned Girmen.
