Watermelons have gained ground on melons in the latest campaign in both productive and commercial terms, as reported by representatives of the Horticultural Melon and Watermelon Market of Castile-La Mancha. The balance of the season has been "profitable and better than last year's."
The president of the Market, Cristóbal Jiménez, announced that the melon and watermelon season that has just finished "has been better than the previous one," with "acceptable" prices, despite the two weeks of August when prices stood at 16.20 Eurocents, "And which failed to reflect the balance there was between supply and demand."
Overall, the season "has been profitable for melons and quite profitable for watermelons," also because "there have been no diseases and pests, like last year."
In terms of consumption, Jiménez stressed the "great quality" of both melons and watermelons, which, together with the high temperatures recorded well into the autumn, has motivated thousands of families to buy them (and continue to do so).
"Demand has remained virtually unchanged during the entire summer season," pointed out Jiménez, with 280,000 tonnes of melons and as many of watermelons, which highlights the huge rise in sales of the latter, which traditionally stay below those of melons.
Jiménez believes that after the commercial success of 2016, "it is likely that next year even more producers will grow watermelons."
