Spain: Heat boosts watermelon consumption and prices

The average price at origin of watermelons with seeds reached 17.99 Euro per 100 kilos in week 35 of 2016 (from 29 August to 4 September), due to the fact there are only small volumes left (the campaign is about to end) and the high temperatures have given a boost to demand.

This was revealed by the latest Weekly Situation Report of the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment (Magrama), which also highlights the week's 3.91% increase in the price of Piel de Sapo melons (which reached 20.73 Euro per 100 kilos).

The remaining price increases correspond to flat green beans (+22.34%), the first Navelina oranges (+4.86%) (although early clementines have fallen by 8.61%), mushrooms (+7.39%), cucumbers (+5.51%), peaches (+2.06%) and carrots (+1.50%).

The sharpest price falls in week 35 have been recorded by courgettes (-24.09%), plums (-19.27%), Romaine lettuce (-15.48%) and smooth tomatoes (-10.66%).

Potatoes, whose prices stand well above those of 2015 and 2014, have seen their prices fall by 7.26%, as the volume available for sale in Castile-La Mancha and Castile-Leon has increased.
