Last week Wilko Fruit started the season for Spanish cherries. "The season started well. We are now receiving cherries every day and they taste great. At the moment it is still the 'soft' varieties such as the Early Bigi, but at the end of this week the first beef cherries will arrive. Then it will be time for the varieties with a bite," explains Wilko. "They can be stored for longer and the retail is always interested in this."
Gift packaging
Wilko Fruit offers Spanish cherries until mid August. "We can supply for longer, as we receive cherries from under covers at the end." The variety Frisco will be the first of the beef cherries to arrive at the end of the week, followed by the 313, Rubi 1,2,3,4,5. As of this year the importer also offers a special new packaging. "It's important to continue to innovate, so we decided to have gift packaging designed. Only the dark, hard, tasty and big cherries of the sizes 28, 30 and 32 are packaged in this."
High prices
The prices are high. "We started with 12 Euro per kilo and we are still at the same level. The cherries in gift packaging are slightly more expensive, but we already have good destinations for this. They will go to various buyers including exporters, small traders, supermarkets and repackagers. There is already a lot of interest!"
More Spanish stonefruit is arriving at Wilko Fruit, including peaches, flat peaches and nectarines.
Dutch iceberg lettuce
There is also Dutch iceberg lettuce available again under the brand Gaudias. Some good photos of the harvest below.
