"Argentina: "Rains not affecting our avocados, but we are on alert"

Even though the rains in recent months are causing problems in the central region of Argentina, they have not affected the avocado production and its harvest. However, the alert remains in force for the entire Argentine territory. "The area of Tucuman, the main producing province of avocados, is not in danger, but we are on alert. Normally, there are a lot of rains from April to July, but no one knowS what will happen now because of climate change," stated Leonela Gonzalez, a representative of Guayal SA.

Tucuman leads avocado production in Argentina as this region accounts for 70% of the total national production of this fruit. Additionally, even though the Hass avocado variety continues to be the most exported variety, production and international marketing of other varieties, such as the Lula and Torres varieties, has increased in recent years. "Chile's production and marketing of avocados is absolutely complementary to Argentina's production and marketing, so the market is well stocked throughout the whole year. The increase in production and export of other varieties would open a very interesting market window for Argentine avocado exports," said Leonela Gonzalez.

"Markets around the world have a clear preference for the Hass variety, but they like to incorporate exotic varieties, such as our Torres variety. At present, the Torres variety is mainly exported to the UK and France. It is a big sized avocado with a small seed, very good pulp, and it is very resistant to long trips, "concluded the spokeswoman of Guayal SA.
