Pingguo County, the future dragon fruit center in China
By 2020, the government wants to plant 670 hectares of dragon fruit plantations. Currently, in the County, there are a total of 700 hectares or fruit orchards, of which half are dragon fruit orchards.
It takes 18 months for a dragon fruit plant to bear fruits, and two years before the first batch of fruit can be harvested. Plants bear fruit for over 30 years. The County has announced it will hand out financial support of an estimated 1,800 Yuan (250 euros) per mu (one mu is equal to 0.06 hectares). The total money put aside for the investments is 80 million yuan, or 10 million euros.
In 2016 and 2017, the County expects to plant another 400 hectares of dragon fruit.
