Big price difference between Dutch and Belgian leek
Freeland is a specialist in vegetable crops with a focus on domestic produce. "One of our main products is leek." Leek prices last winter had been too low for too long. This is partly because it was barely cold in Europe. As a result of this, neighbouring countries have been able to go on with their own leeks for longer before switching to Dutch leeks. Also in the Netherlands growers have been able to harvest the necessary kilos due to the mild weather, so there were more kilos on a fairly quiet market. At the moment, prices are reasonable for this time of year, although they could have been a little higher. It is unfortunate that the price on Belgian auctions lies below that of Dutch auctions, as this of course takes a toll on the export of the Dutch product." He concludes by stating that, "precisely at moments like this is when the true strength of our company becomes clear: a very diverse but strong foundation on regular customers which guarantees daily sales for both Freeland and its growers."
