Iceberg lettuce season to start in two weeks' time

F.lli Cerrato, a company specialising in leafy vegetables, with facilities in Campania and Abruzzo, reports how the Iceberg lettuce campaign is about to start in the Caserta area. Loreto Cerrato works in the family business with cousins Angelo and Antonio and explains how "we will start harvesting in two weeks' time, while transplants in the Avezzano area have already started and are twenty days early."

The weather conditions during the winter are not worrying the producers too much - "the lack of cold temperatures usually means that the soil is not sterilised during the winter months. We haven't encountered problems so far, but it's still early to see if soil conditions are ideal or not."

F.lli Cerrato's Iceberg lettuce is destined to wholesale markets in northern and southern Italy and to retailers in northern Italy. "We have to compete with other foreign producer countries like Spain, but we hope the market will promote the domestic produce."

In the meantime, the company has increased its investments - from 1.6 million heads last year to around 2 million this season. "Plants are looking healthy and in excellent condition."

F.lli Cerrato started cultivating Iceberg lettuce eight years ago and has since invested in new technologies to supply the market with a high-quality product. In addition to the vacuum cooler (in the photo), a wrapper was also introduced.

In addition, the company is testing new natural methods to extend shelf-life.

"We believe we are the only ones who process lettuce heads with such care! I do hope demand will be livelier than what we have registered so far for endive and red chicory."
