The mango season in Indonesia lasts from June to December, although the peak in production is recorded from September onwards. The main varieties are Harumanis and Alphonso. “The Harumanis which reaches sizes of 400 to 600 grams is the one mainly intended for export, which we ship to Singapore, and it not only sweeter and tastier than the Alphonso, but cheaper as well,” states Mohan. “The Alphonso stays mostly in the domestic market because its quality cannot compete with the one from Indian suppliers.”
He explains that mango growing in Indonesia is still carried out with traditional methods, with only a few receiving support from the government. “For fruit exports, we are forced to ship mostly by air, which makes it hard to compete against other countries, but we now have an agreement with an airline, so we are getting better prices now.”
