In February this year, Citronex, one of Europe’s largest banana importers, opened a new distribution centre in Pruszcz Gdański. The company has built 34 chambers for the ripening of bananas (11 single and 23 double).
"This location is not accidental. We are very closely located to the port of Gdansk, where we receive our bananas from South America. This will help keep the bananas fresh and minimise logistics costs for the benefit of our customers. In the new distribution centre, we are able to ripen over 80 thousand cartons per week,” explains Marek Szulc, General Manager of the firm.
The new distribution centre is just a part of a long-term plan. Inside the port of Gdansk’s “free zone”, Citronex has warehouse infrastructure at its disposal with an area of around 20,000m2. It contains 6 air conditioning chambers with an area of 12,000 m2.
“Right now we have full control over the supply chain, which is very important for supermarkets, which are our main clients. We control our fruits from the plantation through port operations, ripening and transportation to final customers,” says Szulc.
Citronex has a much larger distribution centre in Zgorzelec, which is located on the Polish-German border. The complex features 140 ripening chambers with capacity for 190 thousand banana cartons and is one of the largest of its kind in Europe.
In addition to bananas, the company is known for its production of greenhouse tomatoes, its transport company and a network of gas stations and hotels.
