Early start to the lemon season in Sicily helped sales prices

Not all the effects of such an abnormal season have been negative. For example, the Sicilian lemon season started very early in September 2015.

"We started selling Sicilian lemons in late September, when competition with produce from other origins is quite scarce. We can definitely say our lemons were the protagonists of the campaign, which was very good for producers," explains Ferdinando Vinaccia from "La Costiera", a company part of the Limone di Sorrento PGI Consortium.



The produce ripened over a month early, which is quite a rare occurrence. "Quality was reasonable and grades were good. The important thing is that we started well. The Spanish also managed to do well on the international markets."

The weather did not help oranges and clementines, though. "I believe the high temperatures prevented oranges from ripening correctly, affecting their aroma. And the market for clementines was practically non-existent."



The Limone di Sorrento PGI campaign started in January with small quantities. The peak is expected from April to September. "We are not expecting great volumes, but quality is quite good. We are talking about a niche product, though."


Lemons and a citron.

One last thing on citrons: "we sell it fresh accompanied with lemons. It is demanded mainly by retailers and the catering industry in Great Britain, France and Germany."
