UK: Child hospitalised after bite from spider in Aldi bananas

A two-year-old boy, Evan Water was hospitalised after he was bitten by a spider in a bunch of Aldi bananas, which caused his hand to swell ''like a balloon''. He was eating the fruit which his mother bought from the budget supermarket chain on February 3, when the spider bit him.

He spent two days in hospital where doctors treated the incident as a spider bite before he was allowed home following a course of antibiotics.

Aldi has since offered Evan and his family four free hampers and £400 as a gesture of goodwill. It is thought the spider crept into a box of the supermarket chain's "worldwide" range of bananas while it was awaiting shipment to the UK from a warehouse.

But the youngster's mother Kellie Knight, 29, of Bishop Auckland, County Durham said: "It was horrifying to think my boy was hospitalised because of a spider hiding in the bananas. Even my older children were terrified to go back into the house. They thought the spider could still be inside and didn't want to go back. I've been told to contact Environmental Health to get it seen to and get someone in to sort the house out, just in case.''

An Aldi spokesman said: "Incidents of this nature are extremely rare and we take them seriously. We have apologised to the customer and are investigating this incident with our suppliers."
