Developed in New Zealand, the Rockit apple is unique in that it's miniature in size and still has a sweet, juicy flavor profile. Blue Whale acquired the growing rights to the apple, and they have plans to sell the first fruits from their French plantings in 2017. But for European consumers eager to have a taste of the new variety, Blue Whale will be importing New Zealand fruit later this year.“This apple is about double innovation, because it's sweet and small,” said Laurent Maldes of Blue Whale. “It's a mini apple for snacking, and the packaging, which is a tube that protects the apple and makes it convenient for eating on the go, is perfect for the nomadic lifestyle.” He believes it will appeal to young consumers because it is sweet and because the youth segment tends to favor snack items.
“It's good for children, for schools or for stocking in convenience stores,” said Laurent. “You take two bites and that's it.” Because it's so small, it's the perfect size for a quick jolt of flavor, and unlike competing snack items, it's healthy.
“Not only is it very juicy and tasty,” added Laurent, “but it also stores well. You can keep it at room temperature for two or three weeks, and it will still be juicy and crunchy.”
Blue Whale has planted 25 hectares of the variety, though Laurent expects to have more planted in future seasons. The first apples from those initial 25 hectares will be available in 2017, but imports have made the fruit available for purchase in Europe, Asia and the Middle East.
