China: good prospects for American pear import

2013 was a significant year for the American Pear Association said Chinese representative Wu Yongliang. "In January that year, American pears were allowed to enter the Chinese market for the first time", explained Wu recently.

"Along with the increase market cultivation of domestic consumers, the reputation of American pears is increasing where the Chinese consumer is concerned. More and more American pear varieties are sold on the markets of Beijing. From 2014 to 2015, the amount of American pears imported by China exceeded 3600 tons, an increase of 13%. This market has already become the fifth-largest market in the world. It is estimated that China will become one of the three largest export markets for American pears within five years. I hope after ten years of market cultivation, the American pear export to China exceeds 20,000 tons, so the American pear will become a popular fruit on the Chinese market."

Unlike Asian pears, American pears take longer to ripen. Therefore, the pears bought in a supermarket have to ripen at room temperature for 3 to 5 day to get the best taste.

Wu Yongliang said that currently the American pear sales are mainly concentrated in North and Northeast China. The American Pear Association just started to promote the pear in Shanghai, Guangzhou, Shenzhen and other cities. The association will also start selling online to reduce the product price.
