Rise in Sri Lanka's fruit, veg export earnings

Sri Lanka's earnings from exports of fruits and vegetables during the year 2014 has increased, compared to the previous year's income, a study conducted by the Ceylon Chamber of Commerce finds.

According to the study, which is titled as 'Fruit and Vegetable Sector Statistical Analysis 2014', earnings from fruit exports has seen the biggest jump, accounting for a 51% rise, while earnings from vegetable exports have gone up by 25% during the same period.

Exports of fruits from Sri Lanka to countries such as UAE, India, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Maldives and Germany all have gone up during the year under review. The above mentioned countries are also the biggest buyers of the fruits produced in Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka's export earnings from vegetables has mainly come from markets such as, Maldives, UAE and UK, which are the biggest buyers of the Sri Lankan vegetables.

The Ceylon Chamber's latest study on the fruit and vegetable sector has analyzed the performance of both the local and the global fruit and vegetable sector during the year 2014. Accordingly, the report has analyzed areas such as the global fruit and vegetable production by variety, world export and import markets of fruit and vegetables andworld export and import products of fruit and vegetables etc. It also has a separate analysis on Sri Lanka's fruit and vegetable sector.
