The harvest of strawberries in Germany is expected to reach 155,700 metric tons and lies above the average of the past six years. The yield of strawberries as well as asparagus is 2% lower than last year. This decline is related to the drought in May.
The acreage used for the cultivation of asparagus was approximately 21,100 hectares in 2015, an increase of almost 5% compared to 2014. The surface as well as the yield are about 10% higer than the average of the previous six years. In Lower Saxony the largest amount of asparagus was harvested, 25,300 metric tons.
The area used for the cultivation of strawberries has declined with 4% compared to last year, to 14,200 hectares. Compared to the previous six years the area is about average while the harvest was about 4% above this average. The largest amount of strawberries was harvested in Lower Saxony, 40,200 metric tons. Followed by North Rhine-Westphalia with 33,700 metric tons and Baden-Wurttemberg with 29,400 metric tons. The total amount harvested by these three German states is about 103,200 metric tons, and 66% of the total German harvest.
The preliminary estimates on acreage as well as the harvest of asparagus and strawberries are the first calculations based on the June survey and therefore provide only rough numbers for the year 2015. The final results will only be available after completion of the autumn vegetable survey.
