Record asparagus acreage in 2015, but lowest yield since 2007

Contrary to the first forecasts the farmers in Brandenburg did not have a satisfactory asparagus yield in 2015.

Low temperatures at night and the dry weather had a negative influence on the yield. The preliminary results are estimated at 15,900 metric tons. That is 1,200 metric tons lower than last year (-7 percent).

This year an average yield of 5060 kg asparagus per hectare were harvested according to the Berlin-Brandenburg Office for Statistics (2014: 5990 kg per hectare). And thus this year’s results were about 8% lower than the 6 years average (2009 until 2014, 5510 kg per hectare). The yield fluctuated between less than 1000 kg and more than 9000 kg per hectare mainly due to weather conditions. According to the current data the asparagus in Brandenburg is cultivated on more than 4,500 hectares.
The harvested asparagus were grown on more than 3,100 hectares, the largest acreage since 1991.

In 2014 17% of the entire acreage for asparagus was in Brandenburg, the second largest area after Lower-Saxony in Germany. Together with Nordrhein-Westfalen they account for more than half of the total acreage for German asparagus cultivation.

The main area is located in the region Beelitz (Potsdam-Mittelmark), the third largest asparagus area after Schwetzingen and Nienburg (Weser).
