Taiwan's mango exports see healthy growth
A total of 3,607 metric tons of mangoes were exported in the first six months of this year, 107 percent more than the same period of last year, said Lin Li-fang, deputy director-general of the Agriculture and Food Agency (AFA) under the Cabinet's Council of Agriculture.
The value of those exports reached NT$400 million (US$12.86 million), an increase of 135 percent from a year ago, Lin said, citing AFA statistics.
The AFA forecast that the total volume of mango exports this year could top 10,000 tons, compared with over 6,000 tons in 2014.
The area given over to mango cultivation in Taiwan is 12,000 hectares, mainly in Pingtung, Kaohsiung and Tainan in southern Taiwan. The Irwin mango, a variety imported from Florida in the 1950s, is the main export product, although several other varieties are also grown.
The 10 export markets for the fruit include China, Japan, South Korea and Singapore, with these countries accounting for over 90 percent of the volume sold overseas, the AFA said.
Export growth so far this year has mainly come from China and South Korea, according to the AFA.
