“This is the third year we’re offering Cup ‘O Cherries,” says Mac Riggan with Chelan Fresh. “In the first year, we shipped 350 boxes. Last year, it went up to 3,000 boxes and this year, we expect to ship 7,300 boxes. Demand for Cup ‘O Cherries is strong so we are working to automate the filling process,” mentioned Riggan.
From two hands to one
Apart from the convenience factor, Cup ‘O Cherries are different from clamshells and pouch bags in the sense that the cherries don’t have a stem. As a result, “introduction of this product has changed cherry consumption from a two-handed experience into a one-handed, “on the go”, experience.” The reservoir in the lid can be used to discard the pits. This convenient product can be found in the fresh-cut section in the grocery store and is a popular healthy snack for people on the go.
XL cherries
Chelan also offers XL cherries in a 15 oz. clamshell. “These cherries are size 9.5 row or larger,” said Riggan. “The product is available in domestic high-end grocery stores and targets consumers that are willing to pay for a premium product.”
Sesame Street
To make cherries more meaningful to kids, Chelan offers pouch bags with Sesame Street packaging. “The goal is to move the kid nag factor from the candy aisle to the produce department,” said Riggan. “A large retail display with this kind of packaging delights the consumer, especially kids.” Apart from cups, XL-format cherries and Sesame Street characters, Chelan offers a wide variety of traditional packaging including boxes, clamshells and pouch bags.Chelan Fresh will have its Cup ‘O Cherries on display at booth #1435 at United Fresh!
