Ducasse variety wins historic Banana Cup

When it comes to buying bananas the choice seems crystal clear.

Consumers are more likely to buy Cavendish bananas because as the main variety grown in Australia they dominate the supermarket shelves, and are also cheaper.
But another variety has caught the attention of consumers in northern New South Wales.

Of the three varieties handed out at the Coffs Harbour Agricultural Show it was the Ducasse that won over the taste buds.

The Coffs Harbour and District Banana Growers' Association junior vice-president Ron Gray said people preferred them to the Cavendish and Lady Finger.

What's been surprising this year is the amount of people who have preferred the Ducasse.

It is the flavour of the Ducasse, also known as the sugar banana, that has people asking where the variety is sold.

Local growers are responding to the demand for the Ducasse and more plants are going in across the region.

Mr Gray said the reasons for the Ducasse expansion were purely financial.

"You can get better production out of the Ducasse than you can out of Lady Fingers because you can only get a third of the production out of Lady Fingers as you can out of Cavendish," he said.
