Fast recooling with Tarp Pre Cool system

Technology is responding to the need to get soft fresh produce, such as soft fruit and lettuce, refrigerated as quickly as possible. What could take up to twelve hours cooling normally in a cold store, can be achieved within 35% of the time with a Tarp Pre Cool system. This results in transport being ready at the growers faster, with reduced energy use, reduced loss of weight in the product, but above all in improved shelf life.

"Not only is less waste produced in this manner, the costs are also reduced. That provides benefits for all parties involved, or as it's also known in corporate social responsibility: People, Planet, Profit," says Willem van der Does of BG Door.

The Pre Cool system pulls the cold ambient air through the product by means of a suction wall fitted with a fan or cooling unit. At the opening, an easily electronically operated tarp is mounted. Because the fan sucks cold air through the opening and the space in between is sealed with the tarp, the cold air will be conducted through the product, providing maximum recooling. This can be done simultaneously for 1 to 24 pallets.

This operation is always carried out together by BG Door and your cooling technician. "In order to fully focus on developing new techniques, BG Door International merged with Van der Heiden Systems in 2004. Both companies bring indispensable qualities together: where Van der Heiden Systems has more expertise when it comes to ripening and pre cooling, BG Door specializes in international trade," Willem van der Does says.

"All in all, fast recooling is a very welcome addition to dealing with fresh produce in a more sustainable manner. It not only offers opportunities to growers and wholesalers in the Netherlands, but also for smaller and internationally oriented exporters. The most important fact remains of course that BG Door International presents a technique through which the quality and shelf life of the products is improved, while costs and waste are reduced," Willem concludes.
