Ukrainian producers seek optimal solutions in vegetable storage to economise

Ukrainian vegetable growers are actively exploring storage solutions, as the absence of proper storage facilities in autumn could force them to sell their produce at rock-bottom prices. The most popular vegetables for storage are those commonly used in borscht.

Oles Kapitanchuk, the manager of LLC "Tolsma Technik," highlighted the current surge in inquiries for onion storage this year. "There is also significant demand for storing potatoes, carrots, cabbage, and beets. Ukraine faces low storage capacity."

Bulk storage is common for vegetables, especially onions, while container storage presents an interesting solution despite additional costs. However, choosing container storage entails considering container expenses, which can be a significant investment comparable to equipment costs.

For farmers, starting with basic ventilation systems for products like potatoes or onions can be a feasible option. However, long-term storage of carrots, cabbage, and beets requires powerful and quality refrigeration equipment.

Repurposing existing structures into storage facilities is prevalent. However, not all old buildings are suitable for efficient storage, necessitating careful planning and investment.

The equipment's capacity plays a crucial role in minimizing cooling time and energy consumption. Climate control equipment ensures optimal temperature and humidity, crucial for preserving quality.

Efficient ventilation saves energy, and proper ventilation system sizing ensures uniform airflow, maximizing storage effectiveness.

Programming systems to operate at maximum efficiency during available electricity periods and integrating climate control with weather forecasts optimize energy usage.

Other essential factors in storage facility design include geometry, management systems, and the quality of storage containers.
