NorgesGruppens and Rema 1000 leading Norway’s retail market

Winners and losers in the Norwegian retail market in 2014 were revealed by the Nielsen report, which shows that, despite economic prosperity, discount chains are gaining ground over corner stores and supermarkets.

Overall, NorgesGruppens led the ranking, with a total turnover of 18.63 million Euro last year, an increase of 4.3 percent.

Market shares are distributed as follows:

- NorgesGruppens has 39.9 percent, up from 39.3 percent in 2013.
- Rema 1000 has 23.7 percent, up from 23.1 percent in 2013.
- Coop has 22.3 percent, down from 22.7 percent in 2013.
- Ica has 10.5 percent, down from 11.1 percent in 2013.
- Bunnpris has 3.4 percent, down from 3.6 percent in 2013.

Kiwi, part of NorgesGruppens, reported a growth in sales of approximately nine percent in 2014. Its market share currently stands at 17.7 percent.

"We are very happy with these results. We have reached a significant market share and have greater growth than our main competitor," said Kiwi boss, Jan Paul Bjørkøy to E24.

Kiwi opened 28 new stores last year. In its efforts to ensure continued growth, it strives to offer a wide range of products, including healthy foods, like fruits and vegetables.

Rise of discounters

Back in 2007, low price chains had 47.8 percent of the market, but this share has continued to increase year after year, reaching 61.8 percent last year. Supermarkets, convenience stores and hypermarkets have all seen their market share drop.

NorgesGruppens has grown steadily over the past four years. In 2011, its market share stood at 37.4 percent.

Rema 1000 has also seen a steady rise in recent years from its 21.3 percent market share in 2011.

Coop registered a small market share loss, while the biggest drop was that of Ica, down from 14.1 percent in 2011 to just 10.5 percent in 2014.
