Spain: Mercadona extends domestic prominence

Statistics compiled by El Economista show that Mercadona has solidified its position as the leader of the Spanish FMCG sector.

It is the Spanish grocer with the highest turnover for the 2013 fiscal year (€18.033 million). This marks an increase of 2.83 per cent on the previous year (when it also held the top position).

Carrefour is just behind Mercadona in the rankings with a turnover of €7.355 million, which marks of a decrease of 2.41 million per cent .

Further down the list are Dia (€4.199 million), Auchan (€3.139 million), and Eroski, with a turnover of €1,771 million in 2013.

In sixth position is Consum, followed by Cecosa Hypermarkets (which was recently integrated into the Mondragón Group).
