Italy: Tomato producers penalised at Lusia's fresh produce market

In 2004, the Lusia fresh produce market sold 653 tons of tomatoes at an average price of €0.40/kg. In 2014, only 120 tons were sold, and the average price was of €0.52/kg. We can therefore say that quantities decreased by 80% whereas prices increased only by 30%.

Producers have been facing many difficulties: the weather was rather wet this year, with big temperature changes compromising the development of produce and making it easier for diseases to spread.

Production usually starts in June with round, salad and bunch tomatoes and ends in September for all varieties. Quotations in June seemed to be rather good but dropped below production costs in the following months.

Demand did not help, as consumers were not very interested in the produce and stopped buying it as soon as prices went up a little.

In general, the 2014 campaign was very negative for tomato producers, so a further reduction of tomato crops is expected for next year.
