Lidl lodges plan to build its largest UK store in Cumbria
And this week a planning application has been lodged with Allerdale council for the 2,500 sq metre development earmarked for land at Milltoft, off Curzon Street, which would be open next year.
The land is owned by Allerdale council and, if the project goes ahead, it would be sold to Lidl as part of a deal being managed by Allerdale Investment Partnership. The initiative was established to enable the council to dispose of surplus assets and deliver development opportunities.
Allerdale Council leader Alan Smith said he hoped that by bringing a “massive name” like Lidl to the town it will become even more of a destination for shoppers.
“Research shows that over two-thirds of the town’s residents currently make the journey to other west Cumbrian towns for their supermarket shop,” he added. “The aim is to keep them shopping in the town, not just at Lidl but also at the wide range of other businesses there. Sports clubs which use the existing site, along with those who cross the field on foot, will still be well catered for, with properly marked pitches and a safe pedestrian route.”
The planning application, prepared by Pram Nayak of Allerdale Investment Partnership (Milltoft Field) Ltd, states there would be nearly 100 car parking spaces onsite. The opening hours are proposed to be between 7am and 10pm Monday to Saturday and 10am to 5pm on Sundays and bank holidays.
