Apple Pay coming to Wegmans Lehigh Valley stores
Apple Pay is a new mobile service that Wegmans customers will be able to use starting Oct. 20 – a convenient way to pay for groceries and pharmacy items. Wegmans has three stores in the Greater Lehigh Valley.
Upon checkout, Wegmans customers will be able to hold their iPhone near the checkout terminal, and with a device account number that is assigned, encrypted and stored in the device, the touch of the customer’s thumbprint will authorize the transaction to be processed.
“For our customers, the biggest thing is it is very convenient,” said Dave DeLaus, Wegmans chief information officer. “You never need your wallet, and it’s extremely secure.”
When a credit or debit card is added with Apple Pay, the card numbers are not stored on the device or Apple servers. Rather, the information is stored in a way that represents the numbers, without using the actual numbers.
“With the launch of the new iPhone – and this convenience – we wanted to make it available to our customers,” said Jo Natale, Wegmans director of media relations.
Apple Pay will work with iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch and will be available at all checkout locations in Wegmans stores, including the pharmacy.
“We are very proud to be able to offer this to our customers … ,” Natale said. “Apple Pay is easy to use and secure – two things that we know are very important to our customers.”
A family owned company founded in 1916, Wegmans is an 85-store supermarket chain based in Rochester, N.Y., with stores in Pennsylvania, New York, New Jersey, Virginia, Maryland and Massachusetts.
