Supeco retail concept launched in Romania
The French retailer Carrefour has opened the first Supeco store in Romania; a new concept which is one half discounter store, and another half cash & carry.
Operated by Supeco Investment SRL, whose main shareholder is Carrefour, the new stores will expand rapidly in cities like Giurgiu, Targoviste and Slatina, following the model of France and Spain, where the new concept was first launched.
Basically, Superco stores are a hybrid between discounters like Lidl, Penny or XXL Mega Discount and Cash & carry such as Selgros or Metro, selling both wholesale and retail products. Supeco aims to provide consumers with low prices, although with a focus on freshness. It has a sales area of between 1,500 and 2,000 square metres.
In Spain, Supeco stores have a simple design, putting the most emphasis on its main products: meat, fruit and vegetables. Also, according to Spanish media, it is a store designed specifically for the needs of people in a time of financial crisis, and in terms of layout, it borrows elements from the Atacadao's Cash & carry format which the French company operates in the Brazilian market.
