Majority prefer quality of local products

Two thirds of UAE population consume vegetables daily

A survey conducted by the Abu Dhabi Farmers' Services Centre via a company specialised in market research determined that two thirds of the UAE population consume fruits and vegetables on a daily basis and that many considered locally-grown vegetables to be better than imported ones in terms of freshness, taste and quality.

7 percent of those surveyed said that they consumed at least five portions of fruit and vegetables per day, as nutrition experts recommend. It was also noted that one in five Emirati families have at least one vegetarian member and that most households consume animal products at least twice a week.

This is the second time that such a survey is commissioned. The Centre conducted the first study in 2011 in the context of its goal to support promotional activities for locally-grown products. In 2012, it launched also its trademark "Harvest farms", intended for fresh horticultural and animal products from Abu Dhabi.
