Bulgaria: more inspections to prevent fraud and illegal imports

The National Revenue Agency and the Bulgarian Agency for Food Safety will strengthen inspections of the fruit, vegetables and foods of animal origin traded in the country.

These will be carried out at commodity markets and sites for production and trade. Fiscal inspectors will focus on whether accurate accounts can be made of the actual amount of funds received, as well as on the compliance with tax and social security legislation. Inspectors will also monitor the issuing of payments and whether workers have labour contracts.

Inspections will continue until the end of the year with the goal of strengthening controls on unauthorised importation of fruit, vegetables, plants, and other products from third countries.

In late August, the Minister of Finance, Rumen Porozhanov, and the Minister of Agriculture and Food, Vasil Grudev, discussed the implementation of such joint measures for a more effective fiscal control and the prevention of illegal imports of high risk for the agricultural sector.
