UK: Sainsbury's local hits 650 stores

In January this year, Sainsbury's convenience estate hit the important milestone of overtaking supermarkets to be the dominant format. This continued push to open two stores per week is helping change the shape of the retailer's business, positioning it for future growth, and better meeting shopper missions. The opening of the latest store in Streatham means the retailer now operates more than 200 Local stores in London. To help support this expansion in the capital the retailer has opened a specialist training facility in Brixton to train team leaders and managers.

People want to shop locally and frequently

Commenting on the announcement, Simon Twigger, convenience managing director said "We know that people want to shop locally and frequently, and that is why our stores are conveniently located in places where people want and need them. We have a strong presence in London - it's where our convenience business started and our Local stores are going from strength to strength."
