Delhaize launches grocery e-commerce in Romania
E-commerce with home delivery and click & collect service
Delhaize Group's Mega Image has launched in Romania e-commerce banner eMAG (www.emag.ro/supermarket). The online banner offers an entire supermarket product range of around 7,500 SKU's in addition to non-food products like consumer electronics. Even though Mega Image operates only in Bucharest and in the south and central region, online orders (for non-perishable products) will be delivered for a charge of RON15 (€3.40) across the entire country within 24 hours. In Bucharest, home delivery is free for orders over RON300 (c. US$90). The retailer has also introduced a click & collect service in its 38 supermarkets in Bucharest and Ilfov. This service applies also for fresh product categories like dairy products, meat and fruit and vegetable.
Delhaize follows Carrefour, Louis Delhaize and Metro Group
Mega Image is not the first grocery retailer to head online in Romania. Louis Delhaize, which operates Cora hypermarkets in Romania, launched its online banner in 2010 and a drive in December 2013. Metro Group's Metro Cash & Carry launched METRO Office Direct, an online banner offering stationery products, electronics, cleaning products and a limited number of food products in January 2012. Metro has been further investing in its multichannel strategy and installed online kiosks in some of its stores in Romania in 2013. Meanwhile, Carrefour launched its online banner in April 2013. In contrast to those players, Auchan, which operates e-commerce in Poland and Russia has not launched any online portal in Romania yet.
Mega Image says 23% of sales generated by private labels
In other news, Mega Image’s parent Delhaize said that 23% of its sales in Romania were generated by private labels in 2013, which means that private label sales were worth an estimated €122 million. The retailer said that the majority of sales were generated by its key private label ranges of 365 (the retailer’s standard range that offers value for money), Delhaize (premium-oriented products imported from Belgium) and locally targeted range Gusturi Romanesti (Romanian Tastes), which includes dairy products, meat products, flour and fruits and vegetables, all of which are produced by Romanian companies.
