Tesco to retain leading position in Polish e-commerce market

According to Tesco, Poland's FMCG market trade on the Internet will grow very rapidly in Poland; a market which is currently valued at more than 500 million, and will reach a billion by 2018. "Interestingly, the Polish market is larger than the Czech, Slovakian and Hungarian markets combined," says Mariusz Nowak, online sales manager of Tesco Poland.

According to a representative of the British network, after only two years in operation, Tesco's web service is the leader in the trade of FMCG goods, with a market share of around 25%.

Tesco's service is currently available in 19 metropolitan areas and supported by 23 hypermarkets. This network allows Tesco to deliver groceries to inhabitants of over 210 cities. Nearly 13 million Polish citizens already have access to the service. "In April, we made the millionth delivery, and by the end of the year we want to surpass the 1.5 million deliveries," affirms a Tesco representative.

He adds that customers' purchases are delivered by almost 200 vehicles. On average, a grocery delivery arrives every 20 seconds.

Tesco wants to continue developing its on-line business in Poland. "For the financial year 2014/15, seven consecutive openings have been planned. We will systematically expand the areas of supply, wherever there is still potential," says Mariusz Nowak. He added that with the launch of the next seven e-shop locations, Tesco will cover more than 30% of the country's population.

The most popular product categories on Tesco's e-shop are fresh products, including dairy products, fruit and vegetables and meat, poultry, and fish. And the hits sale are: sugar, butter, bananas, mineral water, potatoes and milk.

Over the past few years, the number of Poles who prefer buying their groceries over the internet has gradually increased for two main reasons: firstly, because of the time saving, and secondly, for the convenience, of not having to carry heavy shopping bags.

Tesco Poland manages a network of about 460 stores, including hypermarkets and supermarkets.
