Germany: growing supply of redcurrants

The supply of redcurrants from German cultivation has increased mid-July, and continues to do so. In the climatologically conveniently located areas in the south of the country, the harvest of main variety Rovada is in full swing now. But in the northern areas, considerably larger amounts are being harvested as well now, German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) reports on its website.

Thanks to the increase of the available supply, more delivery programmes with food traders could be agreed upon. On the one hand, this led to somewhat lower prices, but on the other hand it also led to swift sales.

The number of special offers with redcurrants has clearly increased in the German food trade in week 29, and since last week, consumers are paying significantly less for the berries than before. At the moment, redcurrants on special offer cost 1.11 to 1.99 Euro per 500-gram tray. This also caused demand to rise more strongly, due to which the market is insufficiently relieved. All in all though, growers can be satisfied with the way the season is going so far.
