New appointments to Michigan Apple Committee announced

Gov. Rick Snyder announced the appointment of Conklin apple grower Michael Dietrich to the Michigan Apple Committee on Thursday, July 17.

Dietrich, whose family apple orchard was featured in a McDonald’s television commercial in 2013, will serve along with Gary Bartley, of Dowagiac, and Damon Glei, of Hillsdale, who were reappointed.

The seven-member committee develops and implements marketing efforts for Michigan's apple industry.

"The apple market and food and agricultural industry are crucial parts of Michigan's economy," said Snyder in a press release. "I appreciate these appointees’ willingness to serve in these roles."

Dietrich is a partner with Leo Dietrich & Sons LLC. He serves as chairman of the Ottawa County Farm Bureau Candidate Evaluation Committee. He will represent District 3 and replace Kevin Winkel, owner of Winkel Orchards in Hartford.

Members serve three-year terms expiring April 1, 2017. Their appointments are subject to the advice and consent of the Senate.

Bartley is the co-owner of Bartley Farms. He earned a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from Valparaiso University.

Glei is a manager of Glei’s Inc. He earned a bachelor’s in business administration from Michigan State University.
