Increasing market demand

Spain: Galicia to grow more berries

Manuel Barcala, of the Foundation for the Development of Organic Products in Galicia (Precoga), stated that his foundation will soon promote the planting and production of berries; to be precise, raspberries, gooseberries and blueberries.

The director of the Foundation points out that market demand for these fruits is on the rise, as not only are they suitable for everyday consumption, but they are also becoming increasingly common in drug development due to the characteristics and proven benefits for human health provided by these berries.

"Raspberries and gooseberries grow spontaneously in various parts of Galicia. We must take advantage of this and observe their progress in controlled environment conditions and on a larger scale," he says, noting that in the case of raspberries "the plants produce every year and reproduce at the speed of bullets."

Furthermore, Precoga is also focusing its strategy on recovering Galicia's native varieties. It is currently immersed in bringing back a domestic cherry tree variety, as well as a pear variety that is almost extinct.
