Tesco and Waitrose dominate Bucks' market

More than half of supermarkets in Bucks are owned by Tesco and Waitrose with the latter taking more than its average share in the county.

According to a data investigation by Trinity Mirror, Tesco is a huge player in Buckinghamshire owning a market share of 51 per cent of supermarkets in the area.

This is far more than the average of 39 per cent it owns nationally. Waitrose also have a big presence in the county owing 13 per cent of major supermarkets compared with the UK average of five per cent.

Aldi has two per cent, Asda four per cent and Lidl four per cent - meaning they are all under-represented compared to the national figures.

Nationally Tesco is the dominant player on the supermarket scene. It owns 38 per cent of the UK’s major supermarket stores compared to Sainsbury’s 19 per cent and Morrisons’ 10 per cent. Asda (10 per cent), Lidl (9 per cent), Aldi (7 per cent) and Waitrose (5 per cent) all own smaller proportions.

Waitrose have built 37 per cent of their stores in the 75 most well off councils in England, and only 15 per cent in the 75 poorest.
