US (VA): Farm officials report promising peach crop
The Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services says there may be slightly fewer of the early varieties that are now arriving, but growers expect a great crop of the best-tasting varieties starting in mid-July. Central Virginia growers report the recent dry conditions have been good for bringing out the fruit's sugar. An abundant supply is expected through early September.
According to U.S. Department of Agriculture figures, Virginia had 244 peach farms totalling 1,375 acres in 2012. The state produced 6,500 tons of peaches valued at almost $6 million.
