Oporello brings Greek fruit to Europe and beyond!

Situated in the Thessaly region of Greece, Oporello S.A. has been packing and trading fresh fruits since 1964. Recently investing more than 20 million Euro in their newest Larissa’s packing facility, they are very well-equipped to handle and ship fruits worldwide.

Oporello's packing facility boasts 17,000 square meters of space in which they can pack up to 10 tons of fruits per hour, explained Mr. Dimitris Manis (Oporello’s Export Department). The state of the art facility includes 22 cooling chambers (15 ULO chambers of controlled atmosphere conditions, 2 pre-cooling rooms and 5 freezers) that have a capacity of 15,000 tons in total. Using the latest technology and methods (i.e. sorting-packing line with water channels, loading and unloading in a cooled area, etc.) they can manage successfully the total amount of fruits they receive from the 300 or so growers they co-operate by capturing and ensuring the best quality and freshness of their products.

“In our packing houses we can pack apples (almost 12 months a year), pears, chestnuts, pomegranates, kiwis, quinces, nectarines, peaches, apricots and cherries” said Mr. Manis. “And all of them are of Greek origin.”

The apple varieties they handle include the Starkinson, Granny Smith, Golden, Royal Gala, Fuji and Jonna. Their pear varieties include the Crystal, Coscia, Abate Fetel, Williams and Santa Maria and their Kiwis variety is the Hayward. While 30 percent of what they pack is for the domestic market (serving all of the major Greek Super Market chains), the main part of their business is the exporting of their products to markets abroad. They ship to Egypt, Holland, Russia, Belarus, Lithuania, Poland, Ukraine, Cyprus, Israel, China and the United States, and the list of countries they ship to keep growing.

“Our main objective is the markets abroad,” said Mr. Manis. “By expanding our export activities as well as growing our share of the domestic market.” “And the only way to achieve that is by investing to our people and business and eventually to offer to our customers the best quality, in the fastest way possible.” “For us, the most important part in our collaborations is the trust and friendship growing together with our customers. This is what makes us keep on going in our effort to provide with an exceptional and unique package of products and services for each one of our customers separately.”
