US: Cherries project up

The United States is expecting 264.4 tons of tart cherries, according to the June 25 USDA cherry report, a 10 percent decline from 2013. Sweet cherries are projected to be down 2 percent nationally, from 331,520 tons in 2013 to 326,240 tons this year.

Washington
Washington’s tart cherry harvest is projected to be significantly higher than recent years. 2014’s estimates are at 26,000,000 pounds of cherries, up nearly 8,000,000 pounds from 2013 and 1,200,000 pounds from 2012. The state is projected to harvest 200,000 tons of sweet cherries this year, a 31 ton increase from 2013.

Oregon
Tart cherry yields are projected to be down from 2013 by 800,000 pounds, but the estimated 3,000,000 pounds of fruit to be harvested would be 2,000,000 pounds more than the 2012 harvest. Oregon is projected to harvest 65,000 tons of sweet cherries, up from 56,000 tons in 2012 and 52,000 tons in 2013.
