'Raise procurement price for shallots'

India: Farmers dump withered shallots in front of officials

Trouble began almost immediately after the meeting began at the district collectorate with farmers dumping mounds of withered shallots in front of bewildered officials and demanding a procurement price of Rs 25 per kg. Farmers from Thuraiyur, who cultivate shallots on 5,000 acres, said tonnes of shallots were withering as they waited for the government to increase the procurement price to Rs 25 per kg.

"The present procurement price of Rs 10-15 per kg will not help as farmers spent around Rs 70,000 per acre and could hardly raise 6.5 tonnes per acre. The transportation costs in bringing the produce to Gandhi market are high and so farmers have been preserving the shallots on farms until the procurement price is raised to Rs 25 a kg," said Tamil Nadu Lake and Irrigation Farmers Association president P Viswanathan. Struggling to cough up nearly Rs 8,000 in bringing their produce to the market, the farmers want a procurement centre to be set up in Thuraiyur.
