Germany: Asparagus boasts largest cultivation area once again in 2013
Over the last year 103,107 tonnes of asparagus was harvested in Germany, the German Ministry of Food Agriculture recently announced. The vegetable was grown on 24,000 hectares by around 2,100 companies, the German website Fruchthandel.de reports.
This made asparagus the vegetable with the highest cultivation area once again in 2013. The list of main cultivation areas was headed by Lower Saxony at quite a distance. Here 5,343 hectares yielded over 23,500 tonnes of asparagus. Second place was occupied by two states: the cultivation area was larger in Nordrhein-Westfalen at 3,901 hectares was larger than in Brandenburg (3,476 hectare), but at 15,659 tonnes more was harvested in Brandenburg than in Nordrhein-Westfalen (15,423 tonnes).
Good harvest figures are also calculated for 2014. After mild weather and good weather conditions in the spring the asparagus season was able to start 14 days earlier this year than in 2013. The warm and sunny weather in the spring also had a positive influence on the demand for asparagus among consumers.
