According to what was announced by Ignasi Iglesias, new variety manager at the IRTA research institute, there are three main production areas - Catalonia, Aragon and Murcia - that represent almost the entire production of the country. Peaches, nectarines and Saturn peaches represent 11.2% of the total 2013 production.
Varieties
The main varieties of Saturn peaches in ripening order are:
• Platerina (Saturn nectarine) - Mesembrine, ASF 07-78, ASF 08-70, Platimoon and ASF 06-88. Plasterinas are only 6% of the Saturn fruit production.
Trends and assessment
15 years after the first paraguayo orchards were planted in Catalonia, Murcia and Aragon, we could say that this is quite a consolidated crop however, in the next few years, the orchards are going to be reconverted with new varieties to supply high-quality produce during summer.
Producer prices dropped in the last few years, whereas production costs increased. It will be necessary to improve the efficiency of the whole chain, produce high-quality produce and export towards new countries.
Monilia
Monilia seems to be one of the main problems for paraguayos. Iglesias (in the photo above) said that "paraguayos have had Monilia problems, just like nectarines. Last year, UFO4, Sweet Cup and Flatprincess were affected."
