No orchard expansion planned
"Demand is definitely there, but if we continued to plant then there would be the chance that volume would become too large for demand. This year we produced almost two million kilos. It has slowly increased but over the next two to three years we are looking at 3.2 million kilos. There is no expansion planned. Small volume is added by growers who have Evelina. The total area is around 100 hectares from 15 growers in Belgium and The Netherlands. Evelina is easy to grow, and not biennially sensitive, so growers can produce a good harvest every year."
Satisfied
Evelina is available until this summer and David is satisfied with the season. "Prices follow the same course every year. We are not in the top segment, like Pink Lady, but we are in a club variety with other exclusive brands, comparable to Kanzi and Junami. The quality this year has been very good and until now we have not had any storage or quality problems. The big difference is that Evelina is a dry apple. That is very difference to Jonagold or Jonagored which gets a bit greasy in the late harvest and weather conditions. By the way, this year it was really difficult to find a good Jonagold. Comparing taste there is a real difference: a while ago an independent bureau conducted taste tests with Evelina, Kanzi and Elstar, and Evelina came out on top!"
