Fruit Logistica 2014, Hall 2.2 - Stand B-02 (Piemonte area)

Italy: Lagnasco Group's blueberries and PGI Cuneo red apples are doing well

"Blueberries did very well in 2013, especially in the English markets, as prices increased by 30%," explains Lagnasco Group director Giuseppe Termanini. Peaches did not do as good, as they had to deal with late harvesting and overproduction. "Angelino plums did very well overseas thanks to their high-quality but only did fine in Europe because of medium-small grades."

"The Gala apple campaign suffered a little at the beginning from delayed production but demand and prices were good because there were no stocks. Things were not the same for Red Delicious, as there was a lot of stock from Chile, which lasted until November 2013, meaning the campaign is still ongoing."

The kiwi campaign did well, as there were 8,000 tons of fruit despite the fact that a lot of orchards had to be cut down because of bacteriosis. Termanini explains that "we sold most of the produce overseas at good prices. We were lucky because grades were uniform, making it easier to ship the fruit."

PGI Cuneo red apples contributed to much of the turnover, followed by peaches and kiwis and blueberries. Termanini says that "we have started a varietal research for late peaches and for kiwis that can survive despite the PSA bacteria. We are looking to innovate apples and table grapes too. As regards blueberries, we are working on a controlled atmosphere storage method and we will also buy a new packaging machine and extend the cold storage system."

"The best innovation was certainly the new fruit waxing machine, which polishes fruit and maintains crunchiness and juiciness better while slowing down ripening."

In order to deal with the consumption crisis, in 2014 Lagnasco Group aims at establishing new business relationships with international markets, and especially India for apples, Australia and China for kiwis and Scandinavia, Baltic republics and Russia for peaches and blueberries.

Lagnasco Group will attend Fruit Logistica, Hall 2.2 - Stand B-02 ("MADE IN PIEMONTE" area): in addition to director Giuseppe Termanini, chairman Simone Bernardi, administrator Giulio Mellano and sales managers Massimo Perotto and Manuel Sola will welcome guests.
